Terschelling è una piccola isola delle Frisone Occidentali, al largo delle coste dei Paesi Bassi. Da sempre isola di marinai e pescatori, poi terra di allevatori di cavalli e bovini, ad oggi l’economia dell’isola si basa su turismo e techno&bio farming. Nel corso dei secoli la terra è stata sottratta al mare con un complesso sistema di dighe e terrapieni, un lavoro titanico che parte dell’identità e dell’orgoglio degli isolani. Negli ultimi anni però la guardia forestale locale e gli ingegneri paesaggisti preferiscono lavorare con l’aiuto della natura invece di combattere contro di essa, non tanto per ottenere nuove terre da abitare o coltivare, ma piuttosto per lavorare sulla biodiversità e su un esperimento di design geografico a lungo termine, pensando all’isola come ad una vera e propria scultura fatta di terra e di mare.
Il documentario di ZimmerFrei è un film corale immerso in un paesaggio travolgente e una meteorologia in continua evoluzione. L’isola è osservata in due momenti opposti. Giugno: i turisti invadono i pascoli con tende e biciclette, sparpagliati in tutta l’isola alla ricerca degli innumerevoli eventi organizzati dal festival di Oerol. Dicembre: l’isola è silenziosa e deserta. I residenti si appartano nei loro fienili a preparare in segreto i costumi spaventosi per “Sundurum”, la notte trasfigurata alla vigilia di Santa Claus. In questa notte di cui si favoleggi ai bambini trepidanti di spavento e curiosità, uomini trasformati in alberi e creature mostruose inseguono e scacciano i fantasmi dall’isola, mentre le donne custodiscono le case e fanno fronte alla brutalità e agli eccessi goliardici dei Sundurum. Tutte le forze della vita quotidiana della comunità sono messe in gioco in un vero e proprio rito di rigenerazione: uomini e donne, adulti e bambini, controllo e trasgressione, isolamento e fuga, il noto e l’ignoto, quello che chiamiamo casa e il mondo fuori.

Terschelling is a little island in Friesland, in the North of the Netherlands. It used to be an island of sailors and fishermen, then became a land of cattle and horses breeders. Nowadays Terschelling is mainly dedicated to tourism and “techno&bio” farming. Along the centuries the land was obtained from the sea with a complex system of dykes and embankments, a titanic work that is part of the pride and identity of the islanders. In recent years, however, the Forresters and professional landscape designers prefer to work with nature instead of fighting against it, not to get new land to inhabit or cultivate, but rather to work on a long term experiment on geography and biodiversity, a veritable sculpture made of earth and sea.
The documentary is a choral film plunged in an overwhelming landscape and weather. The island is observed in two opposite moments: in June the tourists invade the fields with tents and bikes, scattered all over the island in search of the countless events organized by Oerol Festival. In December the island is silent and deserted. The residents secretly prepare their scary costumes for “Sundurum”, the transfigured night on the eve of Santa Claus in which men chase ghosts from the island. All the forces of the community’s everyday life is called into play in this sort of pagan carnival: control and transgression, isolation and escape, men and women, adults and children, what we call home and the outer world.
