This Belgian-Italian collective of artists develops its projects from the field. Long-running european project, Family Affair has had its filmmaker, its director and its sound designer share the everyday life of a few families, some of which were from Valenciennes and Vieux Condé.
What they have been observing is staged in a show combining video and amateur performance. Various languages to enlighten one family, far from any stereotype, and exemplify our changing society. In Valenciennes and Vieux Condé, fathers are the heroes of the show. As a consequence, we are looking for fathers who would share their experience and stage their family.

Incontro con ZIMMERFREI
ZimmerFrei fa della città il vero protagonista di “Temporary Cities”, ciclo di film-documentari realizzati a partire dal 2010. La città vissuta con il corpo, la città vera e immaginaria che si forma e trasforma nella percezione dei cittadini. Sono ritratti girati con l’occhio puntato su piccole aree, un quartiere o anche solo una piazza, al cui centro ci sono i modi e tempi dell’abitare. Anna De Manincor e Massimo Carozzi propongono un percorso nei ritratti di Brussels, Copenhagen, Budapest, Mutonia e Marseille e l’ascolto di paths acustici delle città che Carozzi ha collezionato e archiviato negli anni.
ZimmerFrei è un collettivo di artisti dalle pratiche trasversali, composto da Massimo Carozzi, Anna de Manincor, Anna Rispoli, fondato nel 1999 con base a Bologna e Bruxelles. Produce opere di vario formato: ambienti sonori, installazioni video, performance, film documentari collaborando con gallerie d’arte e musei, teatri, festival e luoghi ibridi. Da anni si dedica all’investigazione della dimensione urbana al confine tra spazi pubblici e territori privati, intrecciando documentario, scrittura sonora e visionarietà.

Durant cinq années, le collectif ZimmerFrei s’est immergé dans six villes européennes. Six tentatives de saisir la ville contemporaine qui se transforme. Six explorations à plus ou moins grande échelle, dans les plis et les replis de différents territoires urbains, au plus près des usages quotidiens et des imaginaires des habitants. Quelles traces reste-t-il de ces rencontres ? Quelle ville se dessine, entre ses murs plus ou moins visibles, et ses espaces en partage ? Quelle place la ville accorde-t-elle à nos désirs de vie ?
En images et en sons, le collectif ZimmerFrei présente une restitution live de cette exploration, Temporary Cities
avec Massimo Carozzi, Anna de Manincor et Anna Rispoli, un collectif artistique au croisement du cinéma, du théâtre, de la musique et de la performance.

W: a publication, installation and walk
WIELS asked BNA-BBOT and Zimmerfrei, a collective of Italian artists, to elaborate a socio-artistic project around the memory of the old brewery it is currently occupying. What was the influence of the brewery on the identity of the area and on the collective imagination of its inhabitants? What is the impact of the art centre today? During the first semester of 2012, Bruxelles-Nous-Appartient (BNA-BBOT) recorded about 20 testimonies with neighbours, past and present workers, and members of the Wielemans family. ZimmerFrei reworked the interviews to make a publication and a sound and photographic installation.
Various elements come to light in the testimonies: a large part of the publication is dedicated to describing the atmosphere of the area during the heyday of the brewery. Eric Wielemans describes the Wielemans family history, one of the biggest business families in Brussels, active in hospitality (Hôtel Métropole), politics and the housing market. Various workers talk about their past work and the events that shaded their last days of work in the brewery. Workers and neighbours were invited to share their vision of the neighbourhood and the restored building today.

Torino Film Festival
Il 24 novembre al Torino Film Festival sarà presentato, per la prima volta in Italia, il documentario di ZimmerFrei Temporary 8th, regia di Anna de Manincor, suono di Massimo Carozzi.
L’occasione è l’omaggio alla produzione filmica di ZimmerFrei, curata da Massimo Causo per la sezione Onde, in cui verrà presentato in anteprima il nuovo film girato a Budapest e una selezione di importanti lavori di videoarte e documentari di creazione.
Il documentario Temporary 8th è stato girato a Budapest nel giugno del 2012, montato a Bologna durante l’estate, e presentato dal 26 al 29 settembre al Festival PLACCC di Budapest, festival incentrato su progetti site specific, sia performativi che installativi, realizzati per spazi urbani (www.placcc.hu).
Il progetto “City Portraits” comincia nel 2010 a Bruxelles con il film “LKN Confidential”, prodotto dall’importante festival di teatro e performance contemporanea Kunstenfestivaldesarts. Il festival commissiona al trio ZimmerFrei un lavoro su rue de Laeken, la strada in cui quell’hanno ha sede il festival. Il gruppo si concentra sui negozi e le botteghe presenti nella via – luoghi privati ad accesso pubblico – e, in collaborazione con i commercianti della strada, realizza un originale film documentario e una serie di installazioni visitabili all’interno dei negozi.
L’anno dopo il progetto diventa ufficialmente una serie, “Temporary cities” e viene adottato dal circuito In Situ, rete di festival di arte pubblica (http://www.in-situ.info/en/reseau), che produrrà in tutto cinque documentari dedicati a zone circoscritte e in via di trasformazione all’interno di grandi capitali europee. A Torino si vedrà The Hill, il film dedicato a Copenaghen, e un nuovo documentario sarà invece girato quest’anno a Marsiglia, capitale della cultura europea nel 2013. La nuova produzione è di Lieux Publiques e il film sarà girato interamente alla stazione dei treni di Marsiglia, l’ingresso alla città via terra.
Ogni film è unico e diverso, anche se il metodo di lavoro di ZimmerFrei, il format dei documentari, è simile per ogni città: viene scelto un quartiere, una zona della città che sta vivendo una trasformazione urbanistica e sociale, e inizia un dialogo intenso e complice con gli abitanti e con i luoghi d’uso quotidiano. Non si tratta di un reportage o di un’indagine sociologica, ma di un contatto diretto tra personalità e percezioni singolari che dà forma a un ritratto originale, immediato e vivo, dei luoghi esplorati e dei loro residenti.
Il documentario è realizzato con e per gli abitanti della zona, che diventano protagonisti insieme agli spazi, al paesaggio che cambia velocemente nel tempo accelerato e compresso delle città contemporanee. La prima proiezione di ognuno dei documentari è avvenuta nel luogo stesso in cui sono stati girati (la strada di Bruxelles, la collina di Copenhagen, un orto comunitario di Budapest), alla presenza di tutti i partecipanti, che sono così protagonisti, giudici e testimoni di un’esperienza creativa comune che prenderà poi il largo con le proiezioni in altre città e nei festival internazionali dedicati al documentario di creazione.
Temporary 8th registra la transitorietà e la precarietà del presente nell’Ottavo Distretto di Budapest e s’interroga sull’uso degli spazi comuni di proprietà pubblica e privata. L’8th District è un quartiere popolare tradizionalmente abitato da una grande comunità Rom, che negli ultimi anni ha sia beneficiato che subito le conseguenze di un’estesa trasformazione e riqualificazione urbanistica, fatta di demolizioni, spostamenti forzati di abitanti e costruzione di nuovi complessi abitativi e commerciali. Questo tipico processo d’investimento, riqualificazione e gentrification si è interrotto bruscamente nel 2008 con la crisi economica internazionale e al momento il quartiere è punteggiato di buchi, lotti vuoti, progetti incompiuti e spazi senza una chiara destinazione d’uso.
Alcuni abitanti ne hanno preso possesso e ne fanno gli usi più diversi: si aprono locali temporanei, si coltivano orti, si improvvisano giochi per bambini, concerti, parcheggi e mercati.
Temporary 8th è uno spaccato della vita di una città che ha bisogno di reinventare se stessa, che vive giorno per giorno la temporaneità stravolta del presente e l’assottigliarsi delle risorse, l’impermanenza della realtà dei luoghi e della loro storia, nel ricordo recente degli edifici che sono stati abbattuti, tra gli orti cresciuti al loro posto e le tracce ancora presenti della seconda guerra mondiale e dell’insurrezione del 1956, tra le percezioni e le aspirazioni dei nuovi abitanti e il complesso intreccio di segni passati e progetti futuri, a scapito o vantaggio di nuovi confini. Il ritmo del film è serrato, da thriller, il ritratto soggettivo e partecipato di un luogo tanto reale quanto immaginario, che non sa bene ancora cos’è, cosa trattenere e cosa liberare.

Et puis minéraux, terres, fossiles, corne, rouvre, chêne, chanvre, soie, chanvre, porcelaine, papier, plombe, ivoire, argent, étain, verre, cristal: le palais et la collection de Charles de Lorrain est une entière encyclopédie de matériaux de provenances les plus variées. Le sol en carrelage de marbre de la salle Rotonde, réalisè avec différents marbres provenants des anciens carrières belges, devient la plate-forme de décollage pour un safari sonore. One of the points of inspiration for the exhibition is derived from the way the relationships between landscapes, cities and people were artistically constructed at the beginning of modernity, in the late 14th and 15th centuries. The first appearances of the landscape in Western art were tied to the increasing importance of the city, and a new cultural model in which the individual view, rationale and actions began to play an active, creative role. it was through the pictorial representation of architecture that new relationships were indicated between man, the world and the divine, between inside and outside, here and there, culture and nature.
The exhibition takes as its starting point the assumption that we are in a kind of transition period where the modern cultural model seems to be exhausted and is subject to fundamental transformations, without a strong and clear alternative having yet emerged.

Reading space and seeing time: The mobile universe of ZimmerFrei

To interact with the art of the ZimmerFrei group is a little like entering in a dimension of time and space in which the common methodical principles are abandoned and sensory processing triumphs over rational processing.
Their research is directed towards a progressive emotional level and the spectator, just like the artists themselves, become active components of the expressive process.
Collective landscapes and private memories are revealed as in a true romance story, articulated by a precise temporal code: the story begins by reading an artistic work, but has to continue in the imagination of the spectator.
There is a beginning, but no end. The touching narration breaks the normal barriers of description to find legitimization in the fantasy of the observer. This important participation factor is underlined by the careful combination of not only visual tension but auditory tension: the spectator is literally wrapped up in the narration, sees it, hears it, and lives it, too.
The concurrence of different stylistic channels creates a symphony of movements and changes which dictates a living and unexpected rhythm, the subjects are always seen in the moment of a gesture, of a dance, which breaks into space but also manages to cut across it.
The exploration of the place, in its various architectonic, urban and social derivations, is animated by the synchrony of two equal but different perspectives, on one side the authenticity of the present, on the other the infiltration of artificial alterations.
There is no desire to taunt reality, rather to demonstrate its multiple possibilities of life.
This is evident in the series Panorama, where urban surroundings are filmed in the spontaneity of daily rhythms, enriched, however, by surreal scenes, carried out by the artists themselves and bizarre performers, or in the stereoscopical installation Muddy Water, in which a speckless natural landscape is tainted by a mysterious and unresolved plot.
With lexical syncretism, a mix of photography, installation, video art and experimental cinema, ZimmerFrei succeeds in its attempt to read space and see time, bringing the paradoxes and antinomies of our current society together, and tracing the fluctuation of transiting views, transitions of life and the exchange of memories.

Le troisième volet du plan lumière invite à lever la tète vers des “touches de lumière”.
L’idée maîtresse de l’artiste est de pratiquer des percements imaginaires dans les façades et projeter le renard au-delà.
La projection d’une image ronde sur les bâtiments ne se veut pas simple décoration ajoutée. Au contraire, la lumière va percer la surface, ouvrir des fenêtres maintenant murées, perforer les murs grâce à l’imagination.
L’intention est de regarder le bâti sous l’angle d’une curiosité sans cesse renouvelée. Deviner des espaces invisibles mais présents, imaginer des intérieurs, endroits de vie ou de travail, lieux par fois vides, par fois saturés d’objets et d’histoires ou en transformation, simplement en projetant un fragment circulaire d’image photographique qui tantôt est documentaire, tantôt une transposition.
Les images sont caractérisées par un sens prononcé de la perspective ainsi qu’une vision en profondeur, à l’image d’un cône visuel perforant plusieurs matériaux de construction.
Les vingt photos ont été prises sur le site du quartier Saint-Jacques et correspondent pour certaines à l’espace intérieur juste derrière le mur, pour d’autres à un autre intérieur pas loin dans le quartier ou encore à un travail de transposition de lieux divers à Bruxelles.

For their first museum exhibition, ZimmerFrei present a set of works specifically conceived for MAMbo, alongside a selection of projects representative of the manifold activities of the group, founded in 2000 by Massimo Carozzi, Anna de Manincor and Anna Rispoli. Videos, installations, sound works, photographs, optical and light devices compose the stages of an exploration of natural and urban landscapes – historical centers and peripheries – to depict the contemporary social universe, identifying unexpected places, images, narrations, emotional tones. ZimmerFrei dives into the present to unearth its complexities, its shadows, its layerings of times and spaces, its histories, its symbolic force. The exhibition is announced from the outside by a neon sign playing on the group’s name (German for “free rooms”): an invitation to discovery, through a spyhole allowing the public to peep at what’s inside the museum. In the hallway, four monitors show videos from the Panorama series: Rome, Bologna, Athens and Harburg are the cities depicted in suggestive and unexpected ways, through a particular time-lapse shooting technique allowing to “compress” a whole day within a bunch of minutes. In the main space a big net, the exhibition’s barycenter, is hanging: Radura, a device conceived to capture within its meshes an imaginary landscape, creating a sound environment composed of interlaced feelings and thoughts.
The exhibition path further develops with some photographic works, including two groups of images that the public is free to arrange as they wish: the former (Tomorrow is the question) shot on the Brooklyn beach of Coney Island, in southern New York, in front of the fabulous architectures of an old Luna Park; the latter (I giorni del cane) in the extreme periphery of Rome, where shepherds and sheep become symbols of an impossible conciliation of archaic times and a degraded present. The projection of the documentary film LKN Confidential composes an unprecedented portrait of a Brussels street, rue de Laeken, intertwining the personal stories of those who work there and of casual passerbys: the city is seen as a cruel and wonderful setting, where every encounter becomes a revelation. A somewhat harsher perspective on contemporary life emerges from the reel recorder of Senza titolo (di un dio minore), a phone tapping transformed into an x-ray of power relations. With these and the other exhibited works (among which the What we do is secret stereoscope and Fino all’orlo colmi di figure, a huge double-face photograph mounted on a cart), ZimmerFrei invite us to become aware of the labyrinthine nature of reality, of its contradictions, of the unexplored richness hiding within it. Today, the artists seem to say, we are increasingly faced with the necessity of reading the world “against the grain”, confronting it with a demanding and attentive gaze, ready to grasp the most elusive symptoms, the small everyday epiphanies in which we can find traces of our shared belonging to the present time.

The Italian ZimmerFrei collective has been making audiovisual city portraits for years. In May 2010 the threesome will invade an entire street near the festival centre, the Rue de Laeken/Lakensestraat: art galleries alongside Chinese takeaway restaurants and tapas bars, the timeless glory of a traditional chemist’s shop facing the steamed glass door of warm-smelling laundrettes. ZimmerFrei portrays the street using close-ups of the shop owners. From the Halal Snack Bar to the house of the cultural organization BNA/BBOT, all allow Zimmerfrei to take a look inside their workspace and their dreams. LKN Confidentialis a video installation about the intimate life of the Rue de Laeken/Lakensestraat that also leaves traces in the street itself, near the flower shop, the neon signs, the video store… By means of small interventions, details in shop windows, sonic traces in shops and stores, the entire street is turned into a temporary installation, an invitation to (re)discover a Brussels “slice of life”.

In occasione della Biennale Fluxus, Zimmerfrei presenta una versione di Song For John Cage, una poesia sonora di Walter Marchetti, registrata nel 1984 e pubblicata nel disco “Per La Sete Dell’Orecchio” dalla Cramps Records.
Walter Marchetti è stato uno dei protagonisti della scena della Neoavanguardia musicale, sin dagli anni ’50, fondatore assieme a Juan Hidalgo del gruppo Zaj, costola europea di Fluxus.
In “Song For John Cage” ogni parola è legata all’altra dal senso, ma separata dal tempo;
Nella versione di ZimmerFrei, il tempo che intercorre fra una particella e l’altra si trasforma in sostanza discreta: sola luce, puro suono, gravità, brevi immagini e accadimenti singolari.
Ognuno di questi elementi potrebbe essere un incipit, l’occasione per una partenza, ma la scansione della frase conserva una forza che li fa convergere in un paesaggio di densità omogenea: una visione del caos al lavoro.
Una platonica indicazione tranquillamente eversiva.
Un suggerimento con una segreta speranza di inveramento.

Next to Les Brigittines and right across from the railway line that cuts the city in two, there stands a tenement building: 11 storeys, 4 elevators, 156 apartments and… around 500 residents. Working together with them, Italian artist Anna Rispoli will transform the building into a dazzling living architecture. By this action the residence will build a temporary monument celebrating their own domestic life. Don’t miss it, as the installation will only be created once, on the opening night of Kunstenfestivaldesarts 09!

Giunto alla sua seconda edizione, ON intende continuare il percorso cominciato nel 2007, riproponendo alla città di Bologna e a tutti i suoi abitanti, una nuova interpretazione di spazi e luoghi della città affidata ad artisti nazionali e internazionali, che lavorano con mezzi e linguaggi diversi. Le opere sono installazioni site specific, di luce e mixed media, realizzate in stretta relazione con l’architettura e la funzione dei luoghi ospitanti, sono opere ambiziose e tese alla comunicazione con la città e il suo alto potenziale ricettivo e creativo.
Le installazioni luminose sono opere a cielo aperto, sospese sopra le teste o appese a mezz’aria, proiettate nella notte o incastonate tra i muri, parcheggiate abusivamente o in libero transito tra strade e caffé, esplosive o mimetizzate tra gli elementi già esistenti, incandescenti, fosforescenti, intermittenti o tremolanti.

La proposta di realizzazione viene dalle stesse premesse sulle quali ZimmerFrei sta lavorando quest’anno: Ghost Track. Come punti di partenza useremo Traccia Fantasma, l’ultimo esperimento video prodotto a Gent, in Belgio: quando ascoltiamo un frammento di colonna sonora di un film, che vive sepolto da qualche parte nella nostra memoria, che immagini si materializzano davanti ai nostri occhi? Dove posso trovare l’atmosfera di quel film in questa città? Quei suoni, quella musica, quei dialoghi, come trasfigurano il luogo dove mi trovo in questo momento? E se filmassi accordandomi a quei suoni? Un’altra traccia è la serie Shooting Test, prove tecniche di ambientazione che trasformano un luogo qualunque in una location per un film da fare. Con un unico e ampio movimento di macchina si trasforma il luogo in un “panorama” che rilascia l’atmosfera di un intero film atraverso pochissimi elementi: uno scorcio, una certa luce, una sonorità, il taglio dell’inquadratura, il frammento di un’azione che finisce fuori campo. Per la sceneggiatura invece viene seguita la traccia di Casa di fantasmi: il testo di una canzone, un ritornello o una sola strofa di una ballata diventano la sceneggiatura del nostro film. Tutti questi elementi vengono usati e alla fine dimenticati, silenziati come una traccia fantasma. Quello che viene evocato è un film che non esiste. Prossimamente su questi schermi: Trailer
